We all enjoy listening to the radio, and most of us love dancing along to the irresistible beats of a dance or trance song. Rarely do we stop to think, however, about the people that are working behind the scenes to generate these modes of entertainment. Disc Jockeys, or DJs as they are more often called, are the talented individuals who select the music that is played over the airwaves, who mix together wonderful combinations of melody and rhythm, and who talk to us like old friends as we drive to and from work. DJs, particularly those involved in radio, have distinct personalities and points of view which are allowed to come out through their regular time-slot or show. In a similar manner club-based DJs develop recognizable musical personalities that are discernible because of their musical habits - a favourite or commonly used beat, a personalised scratching or mixing technique, or a frequently used sample are easy ways to tell one DJ from another.
The overwhelming majority of radio disc jockeys and dance-club DJs are unsung heroes, however, who strive for fame and fortune but usually remain 'regular' people just like the rest of us. Celebrity doesn't come easy to DJs who are often separated from their appreciative public by a booth, a deck, or in the case of radio DJs, the studio they broadcast from. While we would instantly recognize the voice of a radio DJwe listen to regularly we might struggle to pick them out of a crowd by their appearance only - and this is the issue that makes it so difficult for would-be celebrityDJs to get noticed.
