club djAnother popular take on the disc jockey is the VJ.  A VJ is a 'video jockey', sometimes known as a video deejay or a 'visual jockey.  VJ's came into their own with the introduction of dedicated music channels such as MTV and Channel V in the late 1980s and early 1990s.  The concept of having entire television channels dedicated to music videos was quite a novelty but quickly caught on, with hundreds of thousands of young people becoming fans of the phenomenon overnight.  Whilst some people use the term 'VJ' to refer strictly to those who mix videos with one another to create new visual treats, in recent years 'VJ' has simply been used to describe the presenters of the TV channels themselves.

Whilst many video jockeys may be passed off by experts as being TV presenters that read of cue-cards, there are many who work tirelessly within the industry to gain notice.  Even the attractive young video jockeys that appear on MTV are actually quite knowledgeable on the music industry, on up and coming artists, and on the back catalogues of those who are already successful.  The big music video channels often hold competitions for the recruitment of new video jockeys and without fail the competition will be swamped with entries.  Some see it as an opportunity to become famous, whilst others truly have a passion for music and would like to take the chance to be able to meet their musical heroes
